A Book about a Song & a Tattoo
When I grew up tattoo’s were not something that people aspired to. 40 years ago compulsory medical inspections ensured that you did not have a tattoo. That included those that would not be visible.
Tattoo parlours of the past lacked the regulations that the modern venues do. Tattoo parlours of the past tended to be located in dodgy locations. Compared to today where they are more likely to be located in a high street or shopping mall. Tattoo equipment is much more sophisticated & hygienic now.
Tattoo artists are held in much higher regard. The skill & creativity of each individual artist mens that there is a much wider choice in style & design.
So it was a shock to return to nursing after a 20 year gap to discover my colleagues with highly visible body art.
The Turning Point
The turning point came when I was due to accept a very ill patient to the unit. I was the other side of a curtain & overheard a conversation between patient & escort.
The kindness & compassion of the nurse looking after the person was very evident. Receiving the patient I was shocked to see they had virtually no ‘naked’ skin visible. The tattoos were full sleeves & right up to their neck.
In an instant all the preconceived ideas I had ever held were destroyed. I learned that the ability of a person do a fantastic professional jobs not affected by having tattoos.
I reflected on all this for some time to come & realised that we are sometimes guilty of adopting views that over time may not be relevant. It struck me that it was a good practice to take some of those long held ideas & subject them to scrutiny.
Part of the reason for having my first tattoo was to celebrate that its ok to change your mind. You can re evaluate your view point & look at things differently.
I now try to take stock of my ideas & views in the hope that I don’t become entrenched in a kind of antiquated dogma that so many people drift into as they age.
A Simple Format
The book is short & in the style of a ‘my first’ children’s book. It was for fun & enabled me to play with different types of technology .
