A Little Walk on the North Side

The area also has a number of bars & restaurants some of which overlook the water front. The museum is free to enter but donations are gratefully received.

It was very nicely curated with items from the areas past & the industries that helped shape it in more modern times.

In amongst this are snippets of information about the First Nation peoples which I found fascinating.

Having used the train to get into downtown & the ferry to cross the water we were able to try out some local beers. The sports bar had a simple menu but they did a very nice pizza.

It was dark by the time we had finished eating so we watched the sunset & the skyline start to light up from the ferry.

An Alternative Art Exhibition

The art centre was hosting a particularly bold exhibition whilst we were there.  The exhibits all had a transgender theme & provided ample questions for us to ponder as we went around.

Indeed it led to much conversation afterwards too. Perhaps that’s where art like music can provide an opportunity to explore subjects that are potentially controversial & to get people talking.

What ever your view I think its good to raise the topic & maybe these exhibits help see things from a different point.

Getting About

Getting around in Vancouver was really simple & think we tried all the various options. The next day we hopped on a local bus get to the Calipino Suspension Bridge Park.

This cost a fraction of the price an organised tour would have cost. Worth doing the research for these things.

The suspension bridge is hidden amongst the trees & is quite a remarkable thing. Not for the feint hearted if you don’t like heights or the sensation of movement when walking across.

As for most tourist attractions it’s worth getting there early as you don’t have to wait so long to go across or get hot drinks etc.

It was really interesting to wander amongst the trees too as there were all sorts of sculptures & ponds dotted about. I use the Seek app to help identify plants which gave me a means of working out what some of the species were.

I suspect a night visit might have been fun too if there is lighting in place as it would give a very different sort of atmosphere.

There were great transparent decorations hanging from the trees & it looked like they could have been lit up at night. Not sure though as we were there in the daytime.

It would be fair to say that the prospect of us being in a position to go on holiday was looking unlikely.

However by the end of October all of us felt the need to recharge the batteries & so a short break to Lanzarote was booked.

In Search of the Sun

It was going to be the first package holiday we had been on in some considerable years.  So there was just a little bit of anxiety connected to what this would be like.

However it proved to be just the thing we needed. Parking at Birmingham Airport was easy & not too expensive. The carpark was virtually next door to where the plane was departing from so meant only a short walk to check in.

The flight was early afternoon so we had coffee at the airport & grabbed some snacks for the plane. Transfer from the airport to the complex was easy enough.

The all inclusive package meant that for the whole week no one needed to think about much other than what to have to eat.

The plan was to do as little as possible really well & I think we succeeded. The blue sky immediately lifted the spirits & the resort encouraged you to take life easy.

Although the type of Raynaud’s that I have means that my hands can still adversely react in warm weather they are easier to manage.

However I still had to ensure that I had gloves handy & had to wear them especially in the shade or when the wind picked up.

Montana Roja

Montana Roja or Red Mountain is an extinct volcano that is located at the southern tip of Lanzarote & just behind the resort where we were staying. It would have been rude not to go for a hike up to see the sights so we did.

Setting off just after breakfast so that it wasn’t too hot we followed the well worn path up the steep slope to the edge of the crater.

Steven The Seagull

The video is a cartoon version of the video I took with my emotional support seagull. I thought I would take photos of places I visit where the seagull sort of phot bombs them.

It was very windy on the day we visited Montana Roja so Steven went for a little fly around in the crater.

View from the Edge

The view from the top was amazing & as it was a pretty clear day the view seemed to stretch for miles.

By the time we were heading back down the number of visitors had significantly increased but so had the heat so I was glad we got there early.

Sunset Playa Blanca

Apart from the day that Storm Claudia blew over the Canary Islands the weather was warm & sunny during the day. This gave me a little bit of a break from wearing gloves.

However cold beer or shade meant hands hand to be covered or the numbness would reoccur.

Island Hopping

Keen to explore we decides to visit the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura. This involved a ferry trip across the water between the islands. It’s a regular service as local inhabitants use it to attend work etc.

Our crossing was smooth & the weather bright and sunny which was in stark contrast to the day of the storm. Normally the islands can be seen by one another however not when Storm Claudia was present.

The coast line of the islands is quite rocky & the currents between the islands quite challenging.

You can see the contrast in the colour of the sky in the pictures above. The temperature dropped considerably too that day & our day trip had to be cancelled.

The statues we came across when we were walking around the town on Fuerteventura. They were quite impressive & if my Spanish had been better I might have been able to have worked out why they were there.

I can’t really say the same for those in my adult years. So his passing brought up so many conflicting feelings.

2025 Not My Year

My world was thrown into free fall as I suddenly found myself having to administer his estate. This was no mean feat & a level of adulting I felt very under qualified for.

Wading my way through complex ‘paper trails’ to bring closure to a bank account or dealing with the tax man as daunting.

The path to probate can be a tough one & took me the best part of the year. I am eternally grateful for the help & support of my husband & adult children during this time.

 A ‘Carenting’ I Go

While all this was going on I also became a ‘carent’ which is the phrase now coined to describe someone who has to help an elderly parent navigate the world.

My parents had been married for over 60 years & my mum as far as I can tell had never lived on her own.

So I found myself on the roller coaster journey of trying to help her sort out all the practical things following my dad’s death & her own health needs.

Again there is no hand book or AI to turn to for advice on this one. More Chat GP than Chat GPT!

So I found my own life & health needs put on pause initially. However it quickly became apparent that was not a sustainable pathway.

As a good friend said ‘ you need to put your own oxygen mask on’. This has been difficult to do at times but important.

One of the first things that slipped was actually writing these blogs. As I became immersed in the process & travelling it became harder to keep up my daily fitness regime.

This had a really big impact on my own health as I manage my symptoms of Scleroderma & Secondary Reynaud’s conservatively. So I have had to work hard to ensure that I have time to prioritise myself too.

Gloves & Me

Scleroderma is a rare autoimmune disease for which there is no cure & its onset can vary considerably between people. I am thankful that currently mine seems to be following a slow progressive pathway.

However this means the onus is very much on me to follow many different self care practices.

On the bright side it has enabled me to embrace my inner weirdo. Quietly amassing a glove collection that could be said to rival the number of shoes that were owned by Imelda Marcus.

I have been nicked named ‘Glovemelda’ for scouring the glove sections of department stores or obscure on line shops in search of the ‘perfect’ multipurpose hand covering. So far this is about as elusive as the holy grail.

Reynauds Phenomena

For anyone wondering why the need for wearing gloves is important. The severity of the Reynaud’s means my fingers can go completely numb with subtle changes of temperature or contact with cold objects.

The frequency of these episodes can damage the small capillaries at the ends of fingers which over time causes these to stop functioning. When this occurs it’s possible to develop ulcers or gangrene that could lead to amputation.

Hopefully in my case it won’t come to that but is why I now might look a bit precious about my hands & go to great lengths to prevent an Reynaud’s episode.

Not to mention having completely numb hands does means you basically cannot use your hands. It’s also quite painfully when the blood returns so best to avoid an episode on so many levels.

Hidden Disabilities

All this means I have joined the ranks of those with hidden disabilities that largely mean that others really have no clue what you might have to contend with daily.

Because the issues are largely internal to the outside world I appear okay but this is not really so. Scleroderma is a complex condition & potentially has a huge range of symptoms that its difficult to distil into a quick explanation.

All of which makes it difficult to navigate the world as those of entitled & judgemental disposition can make your day just a little bit more difficult to deal with.

For example the random bloke in a pub who commented on my wearing gloves on a hot day. When I failed to respond to his ‘joke’ somehow it was my fault.

Would he have felt inclined to direct his ‘joke’ at someone with a more obvious impairment I wonder?

I already have a level of self consciousness about having to wear warmer than average clothes or gloves. So all he did was make me feel even more so.

That said I count myself fortunate to have a number of fantastically supportive friends that make maintaining a social life possible.

Not to mention a bunch of fellow Taekwondo students who weekly create a safe space for me to continue to train.

Could the year get worse?

The answer was yes. No sooner than had the ink dried on the probate certificate. Then it became evident that my father in law was deteriorating.

It felt like a horrible kind of groundhog day. Sadly he became more frail & passed away too. So now my husband found himself ‘carenting’ too.

2026 A Brighter Future?

So as the year came to a close I was trying to look to the future in a more positive way. The words from a song called Weightless by All Time Low came to mind.

‘Maybe it’s not my weekend but it’s gonna be my year
And I’m so sick of watching while the minutes pass as I go nowhere
And this is my reaction to everything I fear
‘Cause I’ve been going crazy
I don’t want to waste another minute here’

Even better was the fact that I got to see them play this & other songs live on my birthday last weekend. I am not completely sure that 2026 will be without its share of drama but at least I have some good gigs to look forward too.

As I write I have finally found time to pick up my guitars to practice & even start writing again. These are small acts of self care but last year proved how vital it is not to neglect your own well being.

The post Now Feeling So Glad That’s Over! first appeared on WTFIMU2N.

Initially I set about trying to plan a trip around the trains going through the Rocky mountains. However the logistics & costs made me revise the plan.

After much deliberations & more research. The most cost effective means of accommodation & transport seemed to be a camper van.

The combination of being able to travel stay in places of outstanding natural beauty won the debate. Flights & van booked left time to consider the potential route.

Love a Good Van Trip

I am a big fan of google maps having used them for previous adventures. So I spent time looking at the map & noting down potential places to stop.

Previous van road tripping made me keen to have an outline route in mind. In this way  it’s possible to know what was possible.

Most van hire is costed per km & even when ‘unlimited milage’ you still. This means you need to know you can get back to the depot within the timeframe.

I have always tried to pace the amount of driving per day & at least had an idea of potential overnight stops. As had no wish to relive the ‘no room at any site’ scenario that happened in a previous trip.

Vancouver

The choice of hotel was tied to the pick up route for the van collection so was a little out of the central area of Vancouver. As a result we had to hop on the train for about 30mins to get us downtown.

Once there we just started to wander about & came across a section of Chinese inspired building & a huge ceremonial bell. From there we located a Tim Hortons for sustenance & then to find the steam clock.

The Steam Clock is a fully functioning clock that is located on a pavement & if you catch it just right the steam pipes emit a musical  sound to tell the time.

Onwards to the harbour area we saw many things including many homeless folks who seemed to have colonised a couple of streets.

The tents & tarpaulins trying to provide some sort of shelter for those who have for what ever reason lost their way.

This seems to be a growing issue for many cities & it makes me sad that the authorities seem to do nothing to tackle this.

Anyway the harbour was busy with people all coming & going as big cruise ships off loaded passengers & others hurried to work.

The water was teaming with various sized vessels including the water planes that seemed to be constantly landing & departing.

So with great excitement we boarded a flight to Vancouver to spend a couple of days exploring the city before collecting the van.

The van was the most well equipped that I had hired. It was very hi tech with lots of  features that were to come in handy over the course of the trip.

Mind you we never got to use the axe that came supplied!

It made me wonder if the place was still suffering the impact of the pandemic & the fact that the visitor numbers would have dropped significantly.

Grand Canyon Take 2

It’s still an awesome feature of nature & I managed to take some photos before we traveled onwards to Hoover Dam. I had previously flown over it but this was a chance to see it close up.

The dam although man made is still  quite an impressive structure & feat of civil engineering. Arriving a bit late in the day we only just scraped in a visit to the centre so were able to understand some of the history.

Holding Back?

I collect pin badges & had to scrape the barrel to find enough change as the internet had gone down & they were cashing up but I did get my badge.

From the dam it was back up the road to Las Vegas & the familiar KOA where we were going to spend a few hours sorting out the van. Getting it ready to return & taking in a last glimpse of the strip before heading for the airport.

In the Mood for a Musical

Wandering around & wondering what to do we happened on the posters for the Meatloaf Musical. Both had enjoyed the music from many years ago.

I think I still have the on music vinyl somewhere so this seemed like too good an opportunity to miss. Inside they upgraded us so close we could almost look up the lead singers nostrils but it was a good show.

I had to stuff my hand in my mouth to stop me from singing along out loud though as I might have been thrown out my singing is so awful.

All too soon we had to clean the van & give it back. It was an interesting to travel from virtually one side of the USA to the other.

The short video is the fountains outside of the Ballagio Fountain outside the Ballagio Resort Building. This has over 1000 jets that spurt water intake to music.

Its completely free to watch & runs in the afternoon every day.The show lasts the length of one song & there are a number of shows each day.

I removed the music for copyright reasons but the video was filmed while Billie Jean  by Micheal Jackson was playing. The evening shows are even more spectacular as coloured lights change along with the water jets.

I have had some fun & many adventures over the last few years.

Sadly though for the time being I won’t be venturing back to the USA as I currently do not like the way things are going.

On my previous trips I had always felt reasonably safe traveling around however this is now not the case. I am a bit behind on my blogs so the next trip will record the adventure to Canada.

Or maybe blasting about on some massive motorbike like a Harley or similar. It was a slightly different experience in the van especially as nowadays much of the old route has been subsumed into modern highways.

Looking for Route 66?

It is still possible to find sections of the original road & places on it but the surfaces can be a bit rough.

The lack of a cohesive road surface in some places is certainly not for the feint hearted.

Still we were feeling brave & managed to go along at least one or two sections & found some odd places to visit.

A Quick Snack

One of the stops when in this neck of the woods is to visit the infamous Road Kill Cafe.  Where you purportedly can eat something that has been run over on the road.

I suspect that nowadays that would fall foul of some law. While  the names were catchy the food was really just nicely cooked and presented food that has been no where near the tarmac outside.

Oatman & the Donkeys

Still we had a nice meal there &  a welcome break in the day as we drove to Oatman. This really was a small & slightly eccentric place.

For starters the buildings looked like they were part of a wild west set except they were really shops & cafes.

The second disconcerting thing was the number of donkeys that were roaming around. It was incredibly difficult to get past them when they decided to just stop in the middle of the road.

From Oatman it was a bit of a race to make it back onto the new road as the old roads were in such poor shape in places its not the sort of place to find yourself in the dark.

The sides of the roads in places just had eroded away & the drop would have been enough to topple a van.

We reached the main road as the sun was setting & headed for the overnight stop as the next day we were heading for the Grand Canyon & Hoover Dam.

Passing by Lake George we made a quick stop to read a historic notice board in a lay-by at Buena Vista.

This told the tale of how Pike & his band of explorers tried with increasing dissatisfaction to climb the various mountains.

They wanted to find routes through the terrain. During this time they hunted buffalo & eventually built a stockade.

Pike was taken prisoner by the Spanish soon after. From there the road took us through the Curecanti National Park to Gunnison then Montrose where we stoped to look around the Ute Indian Museum.

A First Nation centre which told of the ways & customs of the Ute who lived in the area before the land was taken from them.

The centre is worth a visit if you are in the area & has a small garden which you can spend time walking or sitting in.

Ridgeway State park

Interestingly it  contains many native species that the Ute would have had use for. Leaving Montrose the road led us through the Ridgway State Park.

Here the terrain looked harsh & dry with a sparse covering of scrub like plants & trees. There was very little in the way of habitation places like Dove Creek looked abandoned.

Bluff was the largest place we came across & decided to stop & take a break. The museum was partially open & we managed to get a drink & doughnut before taking a look around.

The museum told of the harsh life that the early settlers from Europe had trying to cope with the hostile environment. Perhaps had they chosen to work with the first nation people their existence would not have been so difficult.

First Nation

The first nation people’s lifestyle had been honed over generations to work with the land. Trying to import a lifestyle from a totally different place seldom is successful & it led to a lot conflict. Some of which seems to remain unresolved even today.

Refreshed we continued on reaching the campground near Mexican Hat. Although we were near Monument Valley it was not possible to travel through.

Primarily because the terrain probably wasn’t good for a rental van & we were also short on time. On this basis we decided to not take the chance.

Instead we travelled on through the Olijato region to Chinle to get to Meteor Crater. Chinle was an extremely odd place & if it hadn’t been that we were desperate for a bathroom break we wouldn’t have stopped.

Covid restrictions for many places by this time had been lifted & the world was slowly returning to some sort of ‘normal’ but not so in this place. It was clear as soon as we got out of the van the local population weren’t used to tourists & masks were still in force.

Thankfully we had some in the van for just such occasion & after finding a rest room we had hoped to stop for a coffee. However two odd characters started to follow us & it felt a little intimidating so we headed back to the van & left swiftly. Not a place for a revisit for me.

Big Hole In the Ground

Meteor Crater or Barringer Crater is literally an enormous hole in the ground that was made by a gigantic meteor that crashed in to the earth. Until you stand on the edge & look in it’s difficult to convey the size of this pit in the earths surface.

The force was immense & changed the otherwise flat landscape quite significantly. It is approximately 1.186km in diameter & 170m deep. The meteor roughly 50m in diameter is thought to have struck about 50,000 years ago.

Like some of the other weird geological formations to be found in the USA the journey from a natural occurrence to tourist attraction wasn’t smooth.

The land has been owned by the Barringer family & the centre remains under their management & the company funds many projects that help further investigation in to this area of science. Visit complete it was time to find a campsite.

Both of us had travelled a bit but not together so this would be a totally new adventure. My friend kindly took on the role of organiser which was handy. As at the time I was about to embark on a road trip to the USA I was grateful.

Viva Espana

Leaving the hubby’s behind we planned to fly fromBristol & head for Seville. My friend had previously been there so I was happy to be guided by her.

She had booked a great little apartment in the city centre  which provided a great base. From here it was easy to explore the many interesting & historical places on offer.

We couldn’t help but indulge in the delicious local food either. Especially because this gave ample opportunities for my companion to try out her phrases.

I mainly just listened fearing my limited knowledge from a language app might not cut the mustard. One of the challenges I have been given is to learn Spanish.

Although I have made a start taking lessons is a little way off as there is only so much a person can learn at one time!

At the moment my guitar lessons take priority. Though my teachers partner is Spanish so who knows might try combining them!!

Flight & transfer went smoothly & we arrived at the apartment late in the evening. So decided to get some sleep & be up and about early the next day.

The weather was spectacularly warm for October. It was great to just be able to saunter down the narrow streets absorbing the sights & sounds.

Good Food

After investing in a map we found navigating a little easier.  Between us & we unearthed some little gems of places to sit & watch the world. Often combining this  whilst eating or drinking something good.

Seville is stuffed full of history stretching back in time. It almost overwhelmed us at times looking at the different architecture & plaques recalling events of the city.

The Cathedral in immense & very popular so we sadly didn’t try to queue to go in. It’s one to put on the ‘to do’ list for another visit.

We took a peek at a collection of unusual guitars then wandered in and around the beautiful public gardens of the Plaza de Espana. Only stopping to have iced lollies under some vines.

Dancing

The evening saw us venture to an evening of traditional Flamenco music & dance in an almost secret location.

A bland garage door masks the enchanted bar that bursts into life in the evening. Her you can sip sangria & tap quietly in time to the music.

The music  & dancing is taken very seriously. It was severely frowned upon to make any kind of noisy disruption while the musicians & dancers performed. Which I thought was very respectful.

With limited time we decided to visit the Setas de Seville on the second evening. Here we could view the key iconic landmarks floodlit as we walked around the undulating walkway.

On the last day as we set off on foot heading towards the bus station & airport. We literally stumbled upon The Case d Pilatos. Arriving as the doors opened we were among the first in.

Here we saw an astonishing colourful array of intricately patterned tiles that lined the walls.

We totally resisted the urge to do the famous dance around the base of the Macarena Gate. I am sure it’s probably been done before.

Sadly by the time we arrived at Basilica de la Macarena as it had closed for the afternoon. We walked on until we found a great restaurant & a fantastic meal before getting to the airport.

This is because I have taken the plunge to wing it a bit with a new domain host. This should give me more scope to be able to fiddle with the settings a bit more.

So for this reason alone please bear with me if the site looks a bit strange for a while. As I am getting to grips with how it will look & how it will be linked to other platforms.

I got into website stuff mainly during the pandemic when I had time on my hands & my blog was just a simple site. Since I have had the opportunity to develop someone else’s site I have learned many things.

Learning as I go

The main one being I like being able to do some of the ‘behind the scenes stuff’.  Hence why I wanted the freedom to do more with my own site.

I didn’t really have much to do with computers. Indeed the first home computer wasn’t purchased until the 1990’s.

I do recall attending a MS Dos course provided by the company I worked for at the time. As I recall it wasn’t the most user-friendly. So I was pretty much a computer luddite until I was given my first Mac Book some twenty odd years later.

Any skills I now process are definitely due to the combination of googling & trial & error! The technology is helpful nowadays as you can acquire prebuilt bit of code. These are known as ‘plug ins’ & definitely make the task simpler but you do have to be careful.

Old Dog New Tricks

I found out the hard way by adding stuff that potentially could have broken my site. I enjoy trying to alter the look & structure of my site. I also have had fun creating content via my phone & then adding the results.

This is now quite a challenging question to even attempt to answer. Having always been someone who has felt the cold its fair to say I am not keen on it. However with the acquisition of Scleroderma & Extreme Raynaud’s I’m not a fan.

Many years ago I can remember planting icy feet on husbands back. I think at that time he wasn’t too keen on the cold either.

Yet curiously having been born during one of the country’s worse winters on record. On some level I do sort of feel an affinity with it.

Snowballs Fights

Could never really ignore the chance of a snowball fight & more lately trying to capture frozen landscapes in photos.

Still little did I know that life had a somewhat nasty surprise waiting for me in the form of a condition called scleroderma with a side order of Reynaud’s Phenomenon.

For those not in the know. This form of Raynaud’s seems to present in conjunction with an autoimmune condition.

Unlike primary Raynaud’s which tends to be limited to the winter months. This is something I now live with all year around.

Indeed I almost crave the cold conditions as at least if I am wrapped from head to toe in warm layers no one notices.

Once you start going out on a warm day with your winter coat & gloves you attract the wrong kind of attention.

I am now in possession of the most impressive range of warm gloves, thermal tops & other ingenious garments with various thermal properties.

Challenging the Cold

Currently I love going out on the back of the motor bike as again I can layer up & no one seems to notice. Somehow a heavy warm bike jacket on a warm day isn’t as odd as an ordinary coat for some reason.

It’s bizarre to think that the cold can potentially cause my hands to reach a level of numbness that renders them useless. Yet in some ways it’s easier to manage in the cold than in the warm weather because layering clothes is so much more difficult.

It’s also harder to avoid the staring & judgy questions when in a thermal top & hoodie when the temperature is high.

Over the weekend we camped in a small tent having ridden to the site on the bike. Careful clothes juggling meant my hands were fine.

Came home & was doing the chores the weather still warm & made the mistake of touching washing out of the machine & bang my finger tips started to go numb.

Marmite Weather?

So I am left with a kind of love hate relationship with the weather. The jury is still out on whether I prefer the hot to cold.

For me the battle to keep my hands from becoming numb & increasing the risk of me losing the blood supply permanently is a daily battle. I am resourceful though so currently working on many ways of trying to keep this under control.

If you spot someone who is wrapped up on a warm day maybe just try to be kind & not make them feel any odder than they already do.

Meanwhile I’m getting ready to go to the pub so the main question is what gloves to wear with my dry robe!
